Secret Company Interview #2 and Album Review

Secret Company are no stranger to NRMB, in fact they were our first ever interview, and are my personal favourite band. With their debut album ‘The World Lit Up And Filled With Colour’ coming out this Friday (10th March, 2017) I had another chat with them on what we can expect…

You've obviously been up to lots since we last spoke, working hard recording the album. What would you say the highlight of 2016 was for you as a band?

Probably headlining BBC Introducing night at Koko! Such a sick venue and was an amazing night. What inspired the name choice for ‘The World Lit Up And Filled With Colour’? The first song we wrote as Secret Company was 'Fever Of Love' and it was originally titled 'The World Lit Up And Filled With Colour' - always loved that title though and when the album came about needing a name, that came back into the equation and seemed nice and fitting! Lyrically there's various colour and light references through out the album too which wasn't particularly consciously on purpose it just happened that way but makes it tie in even better. Will we be able to experience a narrative throughout it? It's more like that the songs cover the last 4 ish years of us being together going through our ups and downs in life together so they're more like a record of our journey. There's a story there to be told but not an obvious narrative. It's quite emotive and also has its dark moments but we hope at the core of it that it hits people in a positive way! What can we expect from the new album musically? Will we be surprised at any of the new songs? Following on from the last question exploring the ups and downs, it made us explore our sound more so there's a few different vibes on there! Which track is your favourite from the new record?

My personal favourite is Out Of The Blue. Love playing that one live too. Listening to the album, I noticed a few of the songs have been re-edited/re-recorded, what made you decide to do that as a band? Well observed! We wanted it to feel like a whole body of work and as some of the tracks are quite different to each other, we wanted to make sure they all sounded like they belonged together. Finally, can we expect a tour to follow the new album? We've been working on that, just wanna make sure we do it right! But definitely intend on making this happen

Short Album Review

After their phenomenal gig supporting Fenech Soler in Nottingham last Saturday, I managed to get hold of a copy of ‘The World Lit Up And Filled With’ before the release.

I've been looking forward to this album ever since it was announced as there's no hiding it that Secret Company are my favourite band. In my opinion they are the best band in the UK at the moment and hopefully this album will help prove that.

The album is excellent from the first beat, with a build up of synthesizers and the signature Secret Company tribal floor toms which can be heard throughout the album. The opening song Final Wish packs a punch from the beginning, and the massive sound impressive vocals from the from Scott the frontman prepare you for the album ahead, the perfect album opener.

The album consistently delivers following on from Final Wish with some more familiar tracks such as Saviour and most recent single Alive making an appearance alongside brand new material such as Mercury, one of my favourites on the album. Mercury is unlike many of Secret Company's songs which we've previously heard but equally just as good. At track 10 on the album this is perfect to bring a more chill atmosphere, preparing for the two tracks that follow, Holding On and Blue Rose.

Blue Rose had to be the most amazing part of the album for me and I think it's my favourite album ender of all time - and I don't say that very often! (my previous one was Give Me Love by Ed Sheeran from + in 2011!) To tell you why it's my favourite song on the album would probably ruin it for you so I'll just let you wait and experience how amazing it is!!

10/10
