Gabe Acheson, aka Goldwash, is an EDM music artist who is becoming well known for his Existential Funk genre. I was able to get an interview with him and ask a few questions about his career…

Lawrence Cotter: What made you start producing music?

Goldwash: I've been writing music, in one form or another, for most of my life. But I started actually producing music in high school, when I realized that I wanted complete control over the song ideas that I had. When you produce, you get to be a control freak about not only the composition of a song, like the melody, chords, rhythms, etc, but also the things like the mix, spacing, and sound design, which are just as important to making a great track.

LC: Are there any artist you would like to collaborate with?

Goldwash: If I could pick just two at the moment, it would be Kaytranada and Bonzai - they've both got super cool styles and are releasing some of the best music out right now. Oh, and River Tiber as well. Just a killer musician.

LC: Your single "Malady" and your newest one "Separate" have been really successful, are you thinking of releasing an album at some point this year?

Goldwash: Yeah! An EP will be coming out soon, which I'm very excited for everyone to hear. It'll be a bit different than the stuff that's already out, a little heavier, darker, more emotional, but I'm really proud of it.

LC: What are your greatest inspirations in the music business?

Goldwash: Kendrick Lamar. Here's someone who can merge free jazz, LA's underground beat scene, and political rap into the hardest and most cohesive album that I can remember ("To Pimp a Butterfly"). He brings this wild, charged music into the mainstream like no one else. And maybe also Rihanna - she releases some of the best and weirdest singles out there. "Needed Me" will go down as one of the great tracks of the last few years, I'm convinced.

LC: What made you choose the name "Goldwash"?

Goldwash: The word "Goldwash" is a kind of gilding, just painting a little bit of gold onto another material to make it seem like pure gold, which is a bit of a joke about how much people obsess over "authenticity" in the music industry. But it's also this idea of taking difficult subject matter like love and loss and making it better, "goldwashing" it, by making it into music.

If you're interested in Goldwash’s music, check out his new single Separate and follow him on social media so you can watch out for that EP soon!
